When to Repot

There are a lot of reasons you might need to repot a plant and it can be confusing to know exactly when the time is right.

Just this week I had a couple plants called Rex Begonia that were drying out too quickly. These are plants that I would recommend be watered once a week when the top inch of the soil is dry. However the plants I had were drying out the next day. I was struggling to keep up with their thirst and they were looking worse for wear. Lots of leaves were looking crispy and several leaves were just dying off.

This is a great sign that it is time for a repot. With plants that like to have moist soil more soil in the pot will keep it moister longer. The plants were in 3 inch pots. Normally I would make the recommendation to size up 2 inches to a 5 inch pot however, I was not repotting because the plant was root-bound, I was repotting because it wasn’t holding moisture properly. So I moved the plant into a 4 inch pot.

As always I used some We the Wild enrich powder that helps to build the strongest roots and gave the plants a solid soaking. by the next morning they looked like brand new plants.

It is just remarkable what a good repot will do for plants. It is not always the solution for what is causing a problem, but it might be!
